Nupur I've never loved an album this much in my entire life. That's not even a little bit hyperbole, this album is genuinely just that good. It takes you across India with perfect smoothness. A truly universal, and unifying, experience. Favorite track: Dhuan Dhuan (Lost in Smoke).

Every morning at Conservatory, the student Orchestra would meet for 3 hours to rehearse. We would all show up 15 minutes early to warm up our instruments, during which time everybody would practice their orchestral excerpts. As I was surrounded by the sounds of Stravinksy’s “Firebird” and Beethoven’s 6th, I would try to run through “Piya ki Nazariya” in Raag Yaman, the Hindustani composition I was learning, and dream of India.

Even though I had never been to India, I had fallen in love with it. The depth and spirituality that I could feel through the music gripped me, and I knew that I absolutely had to go there.

After graduating and moving to the Gurukul of Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia in Mumbai, I would again go to class every morning for 3 hours...except this time I was repeating phrases of Alaap in Raag Bhairavi. And as I would listen to the sound of the flute drifting through the air, I would imagine the sounds of a Symphony accompanying my teacher. Now several years later, I travel back and forth from the US to India, recording musicians and giving concerts in both parts of the world. I guess you could say that I am searching for a home for this music...It doesn’t belong completely to India, or to the West.

What started as a search to find the musical thread connecting these very different cultures has developed into something else entirely. It’s as if that thread, the musical filament, has woven itself into a dream world, suspended between both places. It’s a world where you can get out at King’s Cross station, walk to Brooklyn, and then take an auto-rickshaw to Juhu beach. This is a world that I dearly wish would exist, and when you listen to this album, I want you to close your eyes and imagine that it does.
